Yet until fairly recent times, individuals and groups alike within the music world had no established support...
Who Holds You Accountable- Or What Does It Take To Get You To Do What You Have To Do
Accountability is an interesting phenomenon. Everybody wants some, most folks think that they can handle it, yet very few people know how to deal with it continually.Much of the problems in business and life are intertwined with accountability or lack thereof. Ill-defined goals, unfocused people, inadequate communication, poorly thought out delegation, low self-esteem and sometimes just bad strategic management often lead to a break down of accountability. When an organizational chart is muddled, the result is usually a bunch of people running around with an unclear understanding of who's accountable to whom. And sadly, even when the chart is bold and clear, it's not uncommon for an accountability...

Five Ways To Learn How To Self-Publish Profitable Books
"Build your advertising campaign around a BIG IDEA or it will fail."David Ogilvy, certainly one of the five greatest advertising people who ever lived, constantly preached that advice to his staff. I was a creative supervisor for his agency, Ogilvy & Mather, Inc. in New York for eight years, creating print and TV ads for clients that included American Express, IBM, KLM Airlines, United States Travel Services and others. I tried very hard to find the "big idea," not always successfully. I hit more "doubles" than "home runs" but D.O., as Ogilvy was referred to in interoffice memos, always stressed swinging hard at every advertising pitch.I often learned more from my strike outs than my occasional home...

Having Fun In Bansko
Roughly equidistant - at around 100 miles - from the major cities of Sofia, and Plovdiv, the region of Bansko has a good local infrastructure, and is well served by air, road and rail links. Bansko is home to many prestigious sporting events, including national championships in snowboarding and Alpine skiing, during its winter season. Skiing The terrain in the Bansko region is, perhaps, more "Alpine" in character than elsewhere in Bulgaria, with some peaks in excess of 8,000 feet. 17 runs, of varying difficulty, with a total length of over 40 miles, mean that Bansko has something to offer skiers of all abilities. Romance In Tortola, British Virgin Islands
Tortola is one of the many British Virgin Islands. Just 60 miles east of Puerto Rico lay the West Indies. These islands are accessible from the air via San Juan or by a 15-mile ferry via St. Thomas (approximately $50/person/round trip). The islands were named one of the top ten Caribbean islands for 2006 in the Conde Nast Traveler. The 12 inhabited islands have villas, apartments and resorts to choose from. Finding the most romantic on each island is my personal quest. I specialize in Romantic travel and I try to find at least one great property on each island I visit to share with my clients. The BVI, as those in the know refer to them, are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom even thought...

Defying Gravity
In December 2003, I celebrated my birthday in New York City doing one of my favorite things, seeing a Broadway show. Now, I've seen quite a few over the past ten or fifteen years, but few have come even close to the powerful impact Wicked has had on me.The story looks at the concepts of good and evil as played out in the relationships we have with others, ourselves, and society. It forces us to question our perceptions of what we consider good or evil and how our individual perceptions mold reality. One of the main characters, Elphaba (the green witch) had the biggest impact on me inspiring me by her uniqueness, authenticity, power, and courage. She stays true to her values and genuine self in spite...
All About New York City Restaurants
OK, let's establish some ground rules. It's called the City, not Manhattan. And under no circumstance should you ever say New York City. Yes, we know some New Yorkers do take things a bit too far and say they are from the City even when they are visiting relatives in Tulsa - where the nickname really loses its luster.Whatever it is you are trying to do while you're in the City, do it quickly and get out of the way. That applies to ordering at the deli (where do you think the Soup Nazi idea came from?), riding the escalators, crossing the street or buying a paper. Things have a faster pace up here and people like it that way. This City will eat you alive if you don't prepare properly. But even with...
What Am I Going To Do With The Rest Of My Life?
Unexpected life changes. Anticipated transitions. Long, sleepless nights. What do these three things have in common? The ability to provoke one of the most haunting questions in the library of human introspectives: "What on earth am I going to do with the rest of my life?" While I can't pretend to answer to this question for anyone other than myself, I can offer those in this position some basic tips on how to ensure that their future turns out as bright as their class valedictorian said it would be. Take Time To Create A Map Too often, when faced with a major (or even not so major) life decision, we tend to either take the first decent choice that presents itself or we allow circumstances to...

Jazz Shrinks Complex World - Jazz History
When I've had a belly full of the complexities of current events I find a jazz band in some out of the way place and retreat for awhile into melody with a big beat. For those of you who are turned on by horns, I recommend a small watering place in Cleveland called the Lake Shore Club. There, Ted Witt and his Forest City Jazz Band hold forth on Saturday nights with the best music this side of New Orleans.Located through the courtyard of an old motel, it is not the kind of joint you would wander into cold turkey. But, take my word, the surroundings are pleasant, the drinks unadulterated, the prices average, the food good and the clientele well dressed without ostentation.I was introduced to jazz while...
It's Back To School For Bowser
For many, fall means back to school. And it should for dog owners as well. A college is a great place to look for a canine hike when you are traveling. You will find many a campus to be dog-friendly. The best time to visit with your dog is early on a weekend day or when school is not in session. At smaller colleges you can maneuver your dog unobtrusively around campus most any time. Here are some of my favorite campus canine hikes:Swarthmore College - Swarthmore, Pennsylvania Scott Arboretum - Route 320 north from I-95 The 300-acre Swarthmore campus is developed to be an arboretum, established in 1929 as a living memorial to Arthur Hoyt Scott, Class of 1895. The Minefields in Your Lease
In some markets across the country -- San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C., for example -- the renters' market is so hot that properties are snatched up the same day they become available. In fact, many landlords in these markets find themselves negotiating among multiple offers. In climates like these, propsective tenants often feel pressured to sign on the dotted line. The reality is that if they opt to take home the lease, read it carefully and return to the property the next day, they'll lose the apartment to another tenant. Unfortunately, this pressure to sign and do it quickly means that tenants merely skim the terms of their leases prior to signing them. Contrary to what you believe...

Yesterday was a pretty interesting day, the weather was cool and overcast, with rain coming in during the latter part of the afternoon. A few weeks ago I had booked a meeting with one of the Big Apple Greeters, an organization of local NYC volunteers that takes out-of-town visitors around the city and shows them local sights and shares local information. The service is a great way to link up with a local New Yorker, and best of all, it's free of charge. We were supposed to meet Suzanne, our greeter, at 11:00 am at the 71st Street subway station, but we got a late start after breakfast and there were some delays on the subway system, so we didn't meet Suzanne until 11:50 am. Suzanne is a former...

Beginnings and Endings Create Life that is New and Fresh
It seems that when I honor the ending, the beginning is more joyous. I admit, I do not always remember to honor the ending. Sometimes I just want the ending to end or the beginning to begin. As infants, we end our time in the womb to begin our human experience. The other day, I met a less-than-one-week-old (or is that new?) baby, filled with health and wonder, beginning a new life. He was clearly ready to begin this life, keeping his Mom in labor for only thirty minutes.I have had many beginnings/endings in my life. Probably not more than most people. Some changes have been elegant, some clumsy. Some have been so quick that I did not realize the transformation until it was essentially complete, while...

Then we started our walk across...
