THEATRE
Mystery Game
- The audience-driven murder mysteries presented by the Mystery Game
Theatre company continue this month with a performance of The Wedding:
Vinnie & Angela's Wedding on April 11th at the Hospitality House and
The Murderer Dunit at the Depot Inn in Pittsford on April 12. Both shows
are presented Dinner-Theatre style and feature a cash bar as well. Call
442-8998.
Arcadia
- The Shipping Dock Theatre at 3690 East Avenue will present Arcadia,
a comedy by Tom Stoppard, from April 18 thru May 11.
- Winner of the 1994 Olivier Award for Best Play and the 1995 New York
Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Arcadia takes the audience smoothly
back and forth between 1809 and the present as it explores the nature of
truth and time, the difference between classical and romantic temperaments,
and the disruptive influence of sex on our "orbits in life".
Call 385-8400 for tickets.
The Importance of Being Earnest
- If you have never seen a play performed in American Sign Language (with
voice-overs for those who don't know Sign), then don't miss the National
Technical Institute for the Deaf's (NTID) production of Oscar Wilde's brilliant
social satire The Importance of Being Earnest. The NTID production will
feature the comedic talents of internationally acclaimed Deaf actor Patrick
Graybill as "Lady Bracknell" as well as deaf and hearing members
of the RIT and Rochester communities.
- Set in London in the 1890s, the play tells of the tangled web weaved
by a young gentleman named Jack who creates a fictitious brother 'Ernest"
as an excuse to leave his country home and go to the city-life of London
where he then masquerades as Ernest.
- The Importance of Being Earnest will be performed April 23 thru May
2 at NTID's Robert F. Panara Theater. Call 475-6254 (voice/TTY).
The Real Inspector Hound
- The final production of the season at Nazareth College, 4245 East Avenue,
will be Tom Stoppard's ingenious play-within-a-play, The Real Inspector
Hound. The story involves two theatre critics who become thoroughly caught
up in an overly dramatic murder mystery they are supposed to be reviewing.
Stoppard's master of clever dialogue and outrageous humor light up the
show, which will be presented April 18 thru 27. Call 389-2170.
FILM
George Eastman House News
- The George Eastman House at 900 East Avenue will screen a special restored
version of Abel Gance's Napoleon (1927) on Saturday, April 12 with live
piano accompaniment.
- This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Paris premier of this story
of the life, loves, and military successes of Napoleon. Perhaps the most
extravagant film every made, Napoleon was completed after three years of
research, writing, and shooting with thousands of extras, a team of a dozen
assistant directors, and at least eight cameramen and cinematographers.
- Beginning April 18, the Eastman House will present another series of
low-budget, highly entertaining films at its Mondo Weirdo series. This
will be a follow up to last year's Mondo Trasho series and will feature
a selection of thirteen films that, because of their unusual subject matters,
were barred from mainstream funding channels. Featured in the series will
be Faster Pussycat, Kill! Dill! (1966), Cobra Woman (1944), The Violent
Years (1956) and a special 3-D screening of House of Wax (1953).
- On April 19th, visiting filmmaker Prathiba Parmar will present her
work Jodie: An Icon (1996) at the Dryden Theatre of the George Eastman
House, 900 East Avenue.
- For information on all these events, call 271-3361.
